This year, more than 1.7 million citizens were once again able to automatically receive back overpaid wage tax through the service of the application-free employee assessment (AANV). Credits amounting to over 810 million euros were paid out fully automatically. On average that is 467 euros per taxpayer. This means that an average of 70 euros more was refunded compared to the previous year. “The high level of service orientation of the finance department is particularly evident in employee assessments without applications. This benefits more than 1.7 million taxpayers who receive a tax credit without any further action,” says Finance Minister Magnus Brunner.

Automatic tax equalization

Since 2017, employee assessment has been automatic under certain conditions. The advantage for taxpayers is that they do not have to file a tax return to receive a tax credit. Overpaid wage tax or a social security refund amount is automatically calculated by the tax administration, unless the automatic implementation of the employee assessment without an application was waived. A tax assessment is therefore issued – without an application – and the calculated credit amount is then transferred to the bank account of the person concerned.

Amounts paid out increase

The amounts paid out increase year after year: while it was around 500 million euros in 2021, the value was 737 million euros in 2022 and in 2023 it will already be 810,673,917 euros.
