Record Jump in Cocoa Prices on London Exchange Worries Chocolate Lovers

Since the price of a ton of raw cocoa on the London Commodity Exchange recently jumped to a record level, just under 5,000 euros ($5,960), chocolate lovers have reason to worry, as just one year ago the price was 2,500. Euros, and last month it was 4,000 euros.

A spokesman for the German chocolate manufacturer, Ritter Sport, said: “The price of a kilo of cocoa is about three euros more expensive than it was a year ago.”

He added: “Anyone can conclude for himself what this means for the cost of producing a chocolate bar, weighing 100 grams, which contains between 35% and 70% cocoa, but we are currently evaluating the situation as a whole.”

The company does not want to say anything about possible price increases, for antitrust reasons. However, the trade association is concerned that increases in raw material prices and wages will lead to increases in costs that could be passed on to the consumer.
