“As of the end of September, the number of people displaced by war, persecution, violence and human rights violations worldwide may have exceeded 114 million,” the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement.

The United Nations Refugee Agency stated that the main causes of displacement in the first half of 2023 were conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the long-term humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan; and challenges such as drought, floods and insecurity in Somalia.

Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “The world’s focus right now, and quite rightly, is on the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. But too many conflicts around the world are spreading or escalating, destroying innocent lives and leaving people Displaced.”

“The international community’s failure to resolve conflicts or prevent new conflicts has resulted in displacement and suffering,” he said in a statement. “We must look within ourselves and work together to end conflicts and allow refugees and other displaced people to return home or start their lives anew.”

According to the UNHCR Mid-Year Trends Report, which analyzes forced displacement in the first six months of 2023, as of the end of June, 110 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced, 1.6 million more than at the end of 2022.
