Record for European champions Italy: 37 games in a row without defeat

Italy resumed the World Cup qualification last week as the brand new European champion, but that did not go very smoothly in Group C with draws against Bulgaria (1-1) and competitor Switzerland (0-0). Meanwhile, the formation of national coach Roberto Mancini remained unbeaten.

And the team kept that status intact on Wednesday evening in the third World Cup qualifier within a week. And with that, a milestone was reached: the 5-0 home win over Lithuania meant Italy have lost 37 games in a row, leaving Brazil, who shared the record, behind.

Moise Kean, played by a Lithuanian defender, gave the Azzurri the lead after eleven minutes. Even before the break, thanks to Giacomo Raspadori (twice, once via Lithuanian Edgaras Utkus) and again Kean, the scoreboard was already 4-0 in Reggio Emilia.

In the second half, Giovanni Di Lorenzo made it into the final score with a nice (but perhaps intended as a cross) lob.
