record drop, less than 100 deaths in 24 hours

The death toll from the novel coronavirus recorded in New York State has fallen to 84 in the past 24 hours, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Saturday, the lowest toll since March 24.

It’s good news“, said the governor during his daily briefing. Hospitalizations, intubations, new infections: the decline continues, he said.

In my head, I always told myself that I had to go below 100“, he added. “It shows that we are making progress“.

At the peak of the pandemic in this state of 19 million people, the most affected in the United States, in the first half of April, authorities had recorded more than a thousand deaths per day – for a total of around 29,000 deaths .

The beaches of the metropolis will remain closed for this long weekend which traditionally marks the start of the summer season in the United States, Monday being a holiday for Memorial Day.

Elsewhere in the state and other coastal areas, beaches will be open, often with physical distancing instructions.

After a lawsuit, Cuomo also authorized gatherings of up to ten people on Friday evening.
