Record Cold Temperatures Hit NYC After 701-Day Snow Drought

After two light snowfalls this week that ended a 701-day drought without snowpack in NYC, the thermometer has dropped considerably since last night, causing the lowest temperatures so far this winter in the region.

“To the extent that low pressure system moves away tonight, a much colder air surrounds it,” the National Weather Service (NWS).

The current thermal sensation is around 18 degrees F (-8C) in New York City today Saturday and is expected much less tonight and Sunday morning (1F/-17C). Next week is shaping up to be a little less cold: 27F (-3C) on Monday.

There is no snow forecast in the next few days, but there is rain on Thursday. Yesterday less than half an inch accumulated in Central Park, considered the benchmark thermometer of NYC, but that amount was enough to dye several areas of the city white. The highest snow total in the tri-state area was reported at 5:00 pm with 5.6″ in Whiting, New Jersey (Ocean County), according to ABC News.

After almost two years without accumulated snow in NYC and a historically warm January 2023, the situation has reversed, with winter worsening this week in the city. In addition, 3 deaths were reported in the north of the state. Doctors and meteorologists remember that Extreme temperatures are very dangerous, especially for the elderly and children..

The previous record for New York City without significant snowfall had been 400 days, which ended on March 21, 1998. Central Park typically has about 24 inches of total snow during a winter. But last year it totaled only 2.3, the lowest amount since records began in 1869.

In general Snowfall has been scarce in New York City in the last five years, with the exception of the winter of 2020-21, when almost 40 inches fell, exceeding the annual average of 29.8.
