Record Breaking Temperature and Delayed Autumn Equinox in Haskovo

An absolute temperature record for today – September 22, was recorded in Haskovo, the local hydrometeorological observatory reported. In the afternoon, the readings of the thermometer reached 33.9 degrees Celsius, BTA reported.

This is, although only one-tenth more, the highest value recorded in the entire more than 100-year history of weather monitoring in the southern regional center. In 1954, the mercury reached 33.8 degrees.

Forecasts are that there could be a new record tomorrow, as even hotter weather is in the forecast, officials said.

Maximum temperatures around 35 degrees are expected. The forecast is for a slight cooling on Monday, when showers are also expected.

And tomorrow morning at 9:50 the autumnal equinox starts. Pencho Markishki, a physicist at the Institute of Astronomy with NAO at BAS and at the Department of Astronomy at SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”, explained that the late start date of autumn, not September 22, as is usual, makes an impression. The reason for this is that we are in the previous leap year of 2024, he explained.

“The average length of the tropical (solar) year is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds, but for convenience the calendar system must work with a whole number of days in the year – 365. Therefore, from this and from the previous three years, accumulated residues of nearly 6 hours, due to which logically the beginning of the annual seasons is delayed by about 18 hours. Counting the leap date on February 29 next year will compensate for the accumulated residues and in 2024 the astronomical autumn will occur on September 22 at 15:43 – nearly 18 hours earlier,” he said.

The equinoxes occur when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, passing for example from the southern to the northern celestial hemisphere on the date of the vernal equinox – around March 20, which is the beginning of astronomical spring for the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth. In September, the opposite happens – the Sun returns from the northern to the southern starry sky on the date of the autumnal equinox, which marks the beginning of autumn for our hemisphere.
