A ruby of 55 carats and a pink diamond of more than 10 carats were sold at a Sotheby’s auction. Both achieved record prices.
At a gemstone auction in New York are noisy Sotheby’s two records were broken on Thursday. As the auction house announced, the ruby ”Estrela de Fura” was auctioned for 34.8 million dollars.
The 55.22-carat gemstone (our picture), found in a mine in Mozambique last year, fetched more than any ruby before it. The record holder was a 25.59 carat stone from Myanmar, which found a new owner in Geneva for $30.33 million eight years ago.

A pink diamond, weighing 10.57 carats and from Botswana, also set a new record on Thursday. The Eternal Pink stone was, according to Sotheby’s, the brightest pink diamond ever offered at public auction. The diamond with the popular cushion cut was also auctioned for $34.8 million.
Before The Eternal Pink went under the hammer, Sotheby’s had shown the stone in Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
