Record holder among flowers

Rafflesia Arnold is a tropical, parasitic plant with the largest flower, the diameter of which can exceed 1 meter. Its weight is also impressive, reaching almost 11 kg. It is no wonder that it is so difficult for a plant to produce a flower that it can only do it once in its lifetime. Zoologist Karel Pecl, whose story is read by Miloň Čepelka, went to Sumatra to look for the flower. The first day the rafflesia is opened, it smells like rotting meat. Do you know why?
Why do locusts eat each other?
Already in the Bible, where the 10 plagues of Egypt are mentioned, the list of plagues includes the arrival of a huge number of locusts that will devastate the crops. Although it is a translation error and it should be about locusts, it does not change the fact that people were already aware of this danger back then. Scientists have now investigated how locusts are arranged to all go in the same direction and what prevents them from eating each other. The details were provided by biologist prof. Jaroslav Petr.

Do planets close to the Sun really have no moons besides Earth? American astronomer Asaph Hall decided to verify this in the case of Mars. He had the best technical prerequisites for this, as he worked with the largest instrument in the world at the time – the 66 cm telescope of the Naval Observatory in Washington. After midnight, it was August 12, 1877, when around half past three in the morning local time, he spotted a small glowing dot near the red planet. Five days later, he spotted a second satellite orbiting even closer than the first. The moons Phobos and Deimos were discovered. Mars has no more of them. His vast knowledge, coupled with the amazing combinational powers of his brain, succeeded where others failed. A number of stories were written directly for Meteor. The radio dramatization of Sherlock Holmes and homo ludens was broadcast by Meteor for the first time in 1987. In it, the famous detective solves the case of a strange theft.
