During Saturday’s program at the Czech Republic Under-22 Championship, two historical highs of this championship fell. Štěpán Schubert took care of them in the 100 hurdles and Karolína Maňasová in the 100 smooth. Michal Rada ran the Czech junior record in the 400 meter hurdles.
Schubert in the footsteps of his mentor
The hurdler Štěpán Schubert has been struggling with a muscle injury in recent weeks, which even prevented him from starting at the recent European Team Championships. A question mark hung over his form. Already in the run-up, however, Dana Jandová’s protégé showed that the break from the race was rather beneficial to him and he came back even stronger. He mastered the opening round confidently, the fastest of all, in a time of 13.92.
In the final, he was even significantly faster, when he completely dominated him in a new personal record of 13.63, with which he ranked eighth in the Czech history tables among men. In addition to Štěpán’s great role model and mentor Petr Svoboda, the last time Martin Mazáč ran faster was in 2013. He also held the MČR record until this year. However, it now belongs to Schubert, who beat the twelve-year-old record by 15 hundredths. Osobák even improved by 23 hundredths.
Championship record for Maňasová
The championship record in the women’s 100 was also about to fall. A hot candidate to surpass it was Karolína Maňasová, who during the season moved her personal best up to 11.26, so Kateřina Čechová’s record of 11.51 from 2008 was in real danger. Maňasová equaled it in the start with an identical performance, and then in the final moved it even further to 11.40, thanks to which she won her first title in the under-23 category. She was accompanied to the podium by defending champion Natálie Kožuškaničová (11.51) and Eva Kubíčková (11.71).
Among men, Eduard Kubelík was the fastest on the same track in 10.63 ahead of junior champion Jakub Peterka (10.66) and Tomáš Lisak (10.72).
Golden hat tricks performed by Suchá and Šínová
Two female competitors managed to win their third title in one discipline in a row. The first was Linda Suchá in the triple jump. She reigned in the previous two championships and added a third record this year, when her performance of 12.96 was enough to win the title.
The same success was achieved by Tereza Elena Šínová, who confirmed the role of the main favorite in the 100 hurdles, which she won in 13.40 and followed up on her triumphs from 2021 and 2022. In the last six years, she missed the podium in this discipline only once. Barbora Navrátilová took the silver in 13.57 and Pavla Kvasničková finished third (13.76).
Rad’s toolbox and other Saturday highlights
Michal Rada from České Budějovice flashed a new Czech youth record in the 300 hurdles at the recent Gigant and now he shined even among significantly older opponents. Already in the 400-meter steeplechase, he improved his own national record from May this year by 35 hundredths to 52.08. At the same time, he could also rejoice at the fulfilled limit for starting at the European Junior Championship in Jerusalem. Ester Bendová recorded the fastest start time of 59.12 among women.
Pole vaulter Apolena Švábíková could enjoy a major career milestone. Although she is still a teenager, she won at the age of twenty-two when she broke the four-meter barrier for the first time in her career. The 400 centimeters she had just conquered secured the most valuable metal for the younger sister of our bronze medalist from the HME in Istanbul.
Long-distance runner Petr Meindlschmid was also among the youngest competitors in the starting field. However, the paper assumptions favored him for the title, which he also clearly confirmed, as he triumphantly won by 754 centimeters.
