Yankees legends Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera set the stage for another historic moment in the world of sports. When the Pittsburgh Penguins opened their 2023-24 season with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the hockey world witnessed something truly extraordinary. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, the iconic trio synonymous with Penguins hockey, etched their names in North American sports history, marking their 18th consecutive season together, a monumental achievement that extends beyond the confines of the rink hockey.

Break a Yankees record

This remarkable achievement surpasses the legendary career of New York Yankees icons Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, who enjoyed 17 seasons as teammates, cementing their place in the annals of North American professional sports history.

Legacy of triumph

Pittsburgh’s triumphant trio began its extraordinary journey during the 2006-07 season, just after Sidney Crosby’s NHL debut. Notably, both Crosby and Malkin were selected No. 1 in the draft, with Crosby taking the lead in 2005 and Malkin taking the top pick the year before.

For die-hard Penguins fans, the long-standing partnership between Crosby, Malkin and Letang is magical. In a sports landscape characterized by constant player movements and team changes, his unwavering commitment to the Penguins is a testament to his dedication and exceptional abilities.

Their collective accomplishments in Pittsburgh are truly remarkable. The Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016 and 2017, and Crosby, Malkin and Letang played key roles in those historic wins. Coach Mike Sullivan couldn’t help but sing their praises, stressing that they belong to an elite class of athletes. They are generational talents, I think that speaks for itself. But all the other intangibles that they bring, they just represent everything that is great about hockey.”

Looking ahead, these three ice legends have at least two more seasons left together. With the recent addition of defenseman Erik Karlsson to the roster, the Penguins are preparing to continue winning the Stanley Cup, aiming to add new chapters to their legacy.

Sidney Crosby summed it up perfectly: “It’s just special. There is no other way to say it. Is not easy. There are so many factors. There is so much turnover in teams, especially nowadays, that it is very rare for players to stay on the same team. The fact that we were able to do it is very special. It is appreciated. You appreciate it, and I hope we continue together for a few more years.”
