Al-Youm Al-Sabea TV presented a special coverage, presented by Ahmed Al-Adl, which dealt with the scientists’ assertion that the summer of 2023 adds more disturbing records to the history books, as the temperature of the world’s oceans reaches the highest temperature ever recorded.
Data from the European Union’s Climate Change Monitoring Program show that average sea temperatures this week were 69.72 degrees Fahrenheit (20.96 degrees Celsius), surpassing the previous record of 69.71 degrees Fahrenheit (20.95 degrees Celsius) set in March 2016.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, the data revealed that average sea temperatures have risen significantly since the 1970s, due to greenhouse gases that trap more heat.
The global air surface temperatures for July 2023 also recorded the hottest month on record.
The new data comes on the heels of a sweltering June as well as extreme weather events, including heat waves in Europe, North America and Asia, and wildfires in Canada and Greece.
The staff of the Climate Change Monitoring Program blamed “anthropogenic” (man-made) greenhouse gas emissions for the respective statistics.
Carlo Bontempo, director of the Climate Change Monitoring Program Service, said the record temperatures are part of a trend of massive increases in global temperatures.
Earth’s oceans are “carbon sinks”, meaning they are good at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. But as the oceans get warmer, they become less adept at absorbing carbon dioxide, leading to more gas in the atmosphere instead.
This simply adds to the greenhouse effect and in turn leads to climate change, but warmer oceans have other serious effects as well.
