Record-Breaking Heatwave in Occitania: Temperature Records Soar in August 2023

Temperature records were broken in all the departments of Occitania this Thursday, August 24, 2023, with in particular 44.4° in the Gard, which could be the national record for the month of August. Discover the heat records in your department.

43.2° in Carcassonne, 42.4° in Toulouse, 42.3° in Nîmes… These are just some of the absolute temperature records broken during this August 2023 heat wave.

This late heatwave episode affecting the south of France is “ unprecedented in its duration and intensity at this time of year “, according to Meteo France. The 40° threshold was for example exceeded on three consecutive days, on August 20, 21 and 22, 2023, in Carcassonne (Aude).

In Occitania, temperature records were broken in all departments on Wednesday August 23, 2023. The national record for the month of August would even have been won by Salindres (Gard), with 44.4° recorded (still being confirmed by Meteo France).

Herault : 44.2° in Siran (former record of 42.5° in 2022)
Lot : 43.3° in Le Montat (former record of 42.1° in 2003) and 37.8° in Alvignac (former record of 37.7° in 2022)
Lozere : 38.2° in Mende (former record of 37.7 in 2023)
Eastern Pyrenees : 41.1° in Céret (former record of 40.3° in 2022) and 39.9° in Perpignan (former record of 38.7° in 1933)
Tarn : 42.3° in Albi (old record of 41.4° in 2003)
Tarn et Garonne : 42.1° in Montauban (old record of 41.7° in 2003)

What makes the heat wave even more difficult to bear are those nights when the thermometer does not go down. The nights have been very hot in recent days, reaching in places the lowest temperatures ever measured.

The hottest night of the year was experienced in Haute-Garonne in particular with a minimum of 27.4° this Thursday August 24 at 7:24 a.m. in Toulouse. The 2003 and 2019 records are shattered by 3 degrees.

Météo France announces a drop in temperatures throughout the territory from Friday, which should continue this weekend.
