[서울=뉴시스]Reporter Yoo Se-jin = Hundreds of millions of people around the world are battling dangerously high temperatures on the 16th as record-breaking heatwave forecasts were issued for parts of the United States, Europe and Asia, AFP reported.

The National Weather Service has warned that it will be a “very hot and dangerous weekend” as heat waves are peaking in the California-Texas region. Daytime temperatures in the region are expected to be between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the normal yearly average.

Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, has been experiencing steamy heat with temperatures exceeding 43 degrees for 16 consecutive days.

Death Valley, California, one of the hottest places on earth, is expected to set a new record as the temperature rises to 54 degrees on the 16th.

Authorities are warning people to avoid outdoor activities during the day and to avoid dehydration.

In Europe, with the Italian Ministry of Health issuing a red alert for 16 cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence, it is almost certain that Italy will break record temperatures. The temperature in Rome, the capital city, was predicted to soar from 40 degrees on the 17th to 43 degrees on the 18th, far exceeding the previous high of 40.5 degrees in August 2007.

In addition, the islands of Sicily and Sardinia are forecast to rise to 48 degrees Celsius, approaching the highest European temperature record set in August 2021.

On the other hand, in Asia, it is predicted that the temperature in eastern Japan will reach 38-39 degrees on the 16th and 17th, breaking the previous record. A heatwave continues in northern India, where monsoon rains have killed more than 90 people.

Heat wave warnings have been issued in many parts of China. It is predicted that the temperature will reach 40-45 degrees in some areas of Xinjiang and 39 degrees in southern Guangxi.

Climate change cannot be blamed entirely for these extreme heatwaves, but scientists say that global warming caused by the use of fossil fuels is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves around the world.
