In recent months, a heat wave has ravaged Asia, setting several heat records in a number of countries.

On Monday, the Chinese city of Shanghai became part of the statistics. A record high of 36.1 degrees was recorded in May.

The previous record was 35.7 degrees. It was set in 1876, and has since been touched three times – in 1903, 1915 and 2018.

Usually the hottest months in China are from June to August, where temperatures are normally between 25-33 degrees.

Should have closed schools

Times of India writes that several schools have been closed as a result of the heat wave. A number of businesses are said to have also reduced their opening hours, and residents are said to have been encouraged to stay indoors and drink plenty of fluids.

International media reports that several cities in Sichuan province will get between 38 and 42 degrees in the coming months.

In addition to Shanghai, ten other weather stations in southern China are said to have set heat records for the month of May, writes The Independent.

Avisa adds that the increase in temperature may be partly due to tropical cyclone Mawar, which is currently passing through the Philippines, Taiwan and southern China.

Have long warned

As mentioned, it is not only Shanghai where it is abnormally hot. Over large parts of the world, record high temperatures have been recorded in recent months.

Among others, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos set heat records for the month of April, har The Guardian reported. But also Spanish cities and Mehamn in Finnmark have recorded record high temperatures recently.

Now that the El Niño weather phenomenon is on its way, it is expected to get even hotter.

Scientists have long warned that heat waves will get worse as the effects of man-made climate change accelerate, and on Norway’s national day the World Meteorological Organization presented a new report showing that there is a high probability that the world will temporarily pass 1.5- degree target from the Paris Agreement.
