The heat was suffocating in the South this afternoon, and especially in Occitania. And as proof, the thermometer panicked in several cities, breaking absolute records.
It was up to 43.2 ° C on the ramparts of the City of Carcassonne (Aude) this Wednesday, beating the 2003 record by more than a degree. On the Toulouse-Blagnac station (Haute-Garonne), usually cooled by the Autan wind, 42.4°C were recorded, thus crushing the 40.7°C recorded on August 4, 2003.
In Albi (Tarn) and Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne), 42.3°C and 42.1°C respectively were reached, while in Muret (Haute-Garonne) the thermometer showed 41.6°C this Wednesday afternoon. In Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) the record dating back to 1947 was also exceeded since 41.1°C was recorded.
Aveyron was not spared by the heat wave, the local record was also beaten there at the Millau-Soulobres station where 39.1°C was recorded. Same value for Saint-Girons in the Ariège Pyrenees where the previous record was more than 73 years old. Further east, 38.2°C were recorded in Mende (Lozère), beating the previous record dating from Monday.
High temperatures at altitude
The thermometer was abnormally high in mountain areas. The historic resort of Mont Aigoual (Gard), nestled at an altitude of 1,567 m in the heart of the Cévennes, recorded a temperature of 30.4°C, also setting an absolute record. In Occitanie, the Chambéry / Aix-les-Bains station (Savoie) posted 38.9 ° C and in Briançon (Hautes-Alpes) it was 36.2 ° C.
The station of Salindres (Gard) recorded at the end of the afternoon 44.4 ° C which would constitute a historic record for the month of August if Météo France confirms it. This station is class 4, which constitutes a “not ideal location” according to Météo France.
Never has it been so hot after August 15 in France. This Wednesday, Météo-France announces that the average temperature on Tuesday was 26.93 ° C, a record since the creation of the national thermal indicator in 1947.
19 departments still on red alert
For Thursday, the heat wave should continue. Météo France maintains 19 departments of the southern half in red vigilance and 37 in heat wave orange vigilance. 25 departments in the north-west including Hauts-de-France, Île de France and Normandy are placed in orange storm vigilance. Temperatures are expected to remain high especially tonight in the south of the country. Heat peaks of 40°C to 42°C are expected in the Southwest.
With the arrival of storms and winds, the heat wave should end this Friday. Temperatures above 30 ° C should still remain until Saturday in the Paca region and in Corsica. From this weekend, Météo France predicts a drastic drop in temperatures which could drop below normal.
