Record-breaking Heat Wave Grips France in September 2023: Hottest Day in Brest at 30.6°C

As the heat wave hit the country, with its hottest day on Monday ever recorded in September, the city of Brest experienced its hottest day of the year 2023, with a record at 30, 6°. This unusual heat should persist throughout the week.

The late and unprecedented episode of heat which affects France sees record temperatures beaten for a month of September, according to Météo-France which still expects up to 37 degrees Tuesday in the south-west and the Center.
These unusual temperatures affect a large western portion of the country, placed in yellow vigilance (first alert threshold), and the heat should persist all week. “The national thermal indicator reached 25.1°C yesterday (Monday), making September 4, 2023 the hottest day on record in September, ahead of September 4, 1949 (24.7°C)“, found Météo-France.
In Brittany, Brest had its hottest day of the whole year 2023, with 30.6°C, confirmed the public body. Further south, Poitou and Charente were particularly affected with 37.0°C in Poitiers, 36.6°C in Niort and 36.8°C in Cognac.

This remarkable heat in early September is in line with the observations of climatologists, according to which human-induced climate change not only increases the severity of heat waves but also their precocity or their late onset.
That of August mainly concerned a large southern half of the country, with a duration and intensity comparable to the historic heat wave of 2003 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Occitanie.
The records of 2003 or 1947 are globally erased in certain regions. These recent heat waves have reshaped the climatology of France“, underlined Monday Matthieu Sorel, climatologist at Météo-France.
The body did not trigger orange or even red vigilance like last month, but 43 departments, mainly in the west and center, have been placed on the first level of vigilance (yellow), which warns residents to be attentive, without more precautions.

We have hot air sucked in from the Maghreb which has gradually returned to the country, with high pressures which have set in and a blockage situation which will last all week.“, predicts Frédéric Nathan of Météo-France.
