Record-breaking Heat Wave Brings Thousands to Grenoble Municipal Swimming Pool

The thermometer reads 39°C. A blazing sun floats over the Championnet district, as it does throughout the Grenoble conurbation. It is 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday July 11, and the queue is 30 meters long along the Jean-Bron swimming pool. Families come with their children (and even their babies), but it is especially young people who are present in large numbers. Indeed, teenagers were by far the most represented in the three main pools of the municipal swimming pool, at the start of the school holidays.

And while the floor at the edge of the swimming pool burns their feet, most of them enjoy jumping into the water rather than strolling on the side: the rare young people who wait on the edge of the pools are those who do queuing for the big diving board.

With this heat, therefore, attendance is at the rendezvous. The equipment did not reach its maximum number of visitors of 800 people at the same time, unlike Sunday July 9 when the swimming pool had to make swimmers wait at the entrance while others came out.

1,866 visitors this Tuesday

Despite everything, the pools were well filled: 1,866 swimmers were counted on Tuesday. What give a feeling of crowd in the water of the municipal swimming pool, but “without overflows. With the security, the mediators, the lifeguards and even the police who come to help us, the swimming pool is well framed, ”explains Justine Vincent, the head of the sports activity department of the City.

But was the pool a good plan to cool off in this heat wave? “Yes, by staying in the water you stay cool! », judges a young girl. Without lingering in the bath, the place is conducive to refreshment: “We drink a lot of water and we stay in the shade. And it’s even better when it’s natural”, confide two friends lounging under a tree.
