HANDBALL – Handball had a historic day this Wednesday, January 10. For the kick-off of the Handball Euro in Germany, 53,586 people filled the stands of the Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, the largest attendance in the history of this sport.

The previous record dated from 2014 during a German championship match between Rhein-Neckar and Hamburg, with 44,189 people in the stands.

Organized in a football stadium reconfigured for the occasion, this Wednesday’s opening match, France-North Macedonia scheduled for 6 p.m., therefore exceeded this mark, before the record was definitively made official during the following match, at same place (at 8:30 p.m.) between Germany, host country, and Switzerland.

“It’s a place and a place that takes our sport to another dimension”whispered French coach Guillaume Gille this week, himself a former Hamburg player (2002-2012). “The place has the characteristics of an indoor room. Air masses are not moving. It’s very nice here, but it’s freezing outside. » “We’re not used to playing in big venues like that”recognized the player Dika Mem.

Still, this grandiose and unusual setting worked well for the French team, which won 39-29 against North Macedonia.

Seven months before the Paris Olympic Games, the Blues would like to reconnect with the European title, which has eluded them for more than ten years. This is also the last Euro for their star, Nikola Karabatic, before his retirement at the end of the season.
