Record-breaking Growth in Motor Vehicles in Cologne 2023: Commercial Vehicles Lead the Way

The city administration has published the report “Cologne Statistical News 3/2024 Motor Vehicles in Cologne 2023”. The evaluations show that the number of motor vehicles will continue to grow in 2023. As of December 31, 2023, a total of more than 585,100 motor vehicles were registered in Cologne, which corresponds to an increase of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year. This applies to all types of vehicles.

Largest increase in commercial vehicles

Commercially used vehicles accounted for the largest share of the overall increase. The number of commercial vehicles rose by 5.5 percent to almost 49,500 and commercially registered passenger cars rose by 5.3 percent to around 86,400. But the number of motorcycles also increased by 2.3 percent to more than 42,800. The total number of passenger cars increased by 1.1 percent, to a total of around 491,700. The number of privately used cars increased by 0.3 percent compared to the previous year, to a total of around 405,400 vehicles. This means that the private car density remains unchanged compared to the previous year at 370 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.

Car fleet is getting older

The average age of cars registered in Cologne continues to rise. While commercially used cars have been around three years old on average over the past ten years, the average age of private cars will increase by around two years to more than twelve years by the end of 2023. The fact that owners have owned their vehicles for longer is also reflected in the newly registered car stocks. Compared to the previous year, there was again a 1.3 percent decline in private cars in the first year of registration. In contrast, the number of commercially used cars registered for the first time increased by 21.7 percent in the same period. The number of all cars in the first year of registration amounts to a total of around 39,100 cars at the end of 2023.

Increases in electric and hybrid vehicles

The number of registered electric and hybrid vehicles will continue to grow in 2023. At the end of 2023, a total of 34,000 hybrids (an increase of 27 percent compared to 2022), 17,300 plug-in hybrids (an increase of 17 percent compared to 2022) and 14,500 cars with electric drives (an increase of 48 percent compared to 2022) were registered. However, the group of gas, diesel and petrol cars still makes up the largest share of the fleet at 87 percent.

Nevertheless, the numbers have shown a constant change in inventory since the end of 2020. The number of registered electric and hybrid cars has increased by around 42,000 cars since the end of 2020, while the number of “combustion engines” has fallen by around 38,000 cars in the same period. What effect the expiry of the environmental bonus will have in December 2023 can only be seen with the figures for 2024.
