This year, the Dutch have purchased around 105 million euros worth of fireworks in their own country, estimates the Interest Association Pyrotechnics Netherlands (BPN). That is slightly less than last year, when a record turnover of 110 million euros was achieved.

Over the past three days, fireworks were allowed to be sold in more than 900 stores. New Year’s Eve is not a sales day this year because it falls on a Sunday.

According to the interest group, slightly less so-called F1 fireworks were sold. This is the lightest category of fireworks, such as sparklers, crackers and small fountains, which may be set off all year round. Sales of fireworks in the F2 category (including cakes, compound boxes, ground flowers and fountains) have remained the same.

Nevertheless, BPN expects that more fireworks will go up this year than last year. This is mainly because an estimated additional 10 million euros worth of fireworks were purchased in Germany. According to the interest group, this is more than ever.

Earlier this week we made this report about ‘Feuerwerkstouristen’:

It was previously announced that the police seized far fewer illegal fireworks this year than usual. This is mainly because no mega catches have been made, as in recent years.

In total, the police seized more than 60,000 kilos of fireworks in the Netherlands this year. In 2022 that was 110,000 kilos and the year before even 205,000 kilos.

Fireworks may only be lit on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve, between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
