Seoul had the warmest spring ever. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the midday temperature in Seoul rose to a maximum of 12.2 degrees on the 4th day of the first spring, making it the warmest first spring on record since 1973, when a weather observation network was installed across the country. It has been 51 years since 1973 (11.4 degrees Celsius) that Seoul began spring with temperatures exceeding 10 degrees Celsius.

This January, the national average temperature recorded 0.9 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees higher than the average temperature (minus 0.9 degrees Celsius). In the case of Jeju Island, the average temperature rose to 7.8 degrees, the third highest on record. Plum blossoms, known as the ‘herald of spring’, opened their flower buds on January 15th and bloomed 32 days earlier than usual. This is the fastest record since 1940, when Korea began recording the germination, flowering, and full bloom of spring flowers. Jeju plum blossoms were in full bloom on the 26th of last month, 11 days later, which is also 46 days earlier than the average year.

It is believed that the reason the Korean Peninsula has been particularly warm this year is because the sea surface temperature is higher than usual. Winter cold is due to the expansion of the northern Siberian air mass, bringing cold waves to the continent, but in January of this year, due to the influence of the warm sea, Korea stayed in the area of high pressure for longer.

Meanwhile, on the 5th, the Korean Peninsula was affected by a low pressure system passing over the sea south of Jeju Island, and precipitation was forecast in most areas. The expected snowfall amount on the 5th is 1 to 5 cm in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong and Jeolla regions, 3 to 20 cm in Gangwon-do, 1 to 10 cm in Gyeongsang area, and around 1 cm in Jeju Island. The expected rainfall is expected to be less than 5 mm in the metropolitan area, 5 to 40 mm in Gangwon-do, 5 to 20 mm in Chungcheong, 5 to 50 mm in Jeolla, 5 to 40 mm in Gyeongsang, and 20 to 80 mm in Jeju. Starting on the 7th, the weather will gradually clear up and it will be mostly clear with no rain or snow until the end of the Lunar New Year holiday.
