Record-Breaking Catch: Norwegian Fisherman Hauls in 44 Tonnes of Skrei

For large parts of last week, the storm “Ingunn” ravaged the coast in the north. It put an end to fishing in Finnmark, but luckily the wind had died down on Friday.

Therefore, fisherman Jostein Fredriksen took the trip out with the net boat “Josberg” from Lofoten.

Like many other fishing boats, “Josberg” has also started the winter season further north, so they are now based in Breivikbotn in Finnmark.

Fredriksen and his colleagues set out four chains with 40 yarns in each chain, and when he had to pull up the yarns on Saturday morning, he got a bit of a shock.

It was The Lofoten post office who first wrote the case.

Pioneering deep-sea discovery

44 tonnes of scree

– On the first link we pulled up almost ten tonnes. Then we pulled up the next one, which was eleven tons. And so it continued. In the end, Will had a total of 44 tonnes on the 160 yarns, says Fredriksen to Dagbladet.

– The nets were jam-packed with large scree. It was absolutely crazy and rarely good, he continues.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes that he has good knowledge and experience of where to find the best cod. But he has never had so many screams at once.

After they had pulled up three of the four chains, the fishing boat was so full that they had to drive back to the quay to unload.

– I have worked as a fisherman for 45 years, and I have never been near so many fish in one trip. I have never experienced anything like it, he says.

Fredriksen says that they feel it well in both arms and hands after hauling in the heavy load.

Shocking discovery in cod stomach: – Tragic

– Very funny

With his jubilee year as a fisherman, Fredriksen thought it was great to be able to catch so many fish at once.

– It was great fun, and especially this year when I have now worked in the profession for 45 years. I have never heard of anyone else who has brought in so much yarn at once, he says.

He tells Lofotposten that the skrei is about NOK 60 per kilo, gutted weight. On Saturday, they thus fished for around one and a half million kroner.

Fredriksen says that there were plenty of other fish, such as whales and herring. In conclusion, he encourages consumers to support Norwegian fisheries.
