Last April has been “extremely dry and hot”, the warmest month of April in Spain since the beginning of the historical series (1961) with an average temperature that has been around 14.9 degrees, that is, 3 degrees above the average for this month.
According to the climatic balance of the Meteorological Agency (Aemet) published this Monday, April has thrown some daily maximums that were on average 4.7 degrees above the normal value; for their part, the minimums were 1.3 degrees above the average, with a daily oscillation 3.4 degrees higher than the normal for the month.
In some thirty main stations, the mean temperature was the highest for a month of April since records exist, while in forty-five main stations the mean of the maximums was the highest in the April series. Regarding the mean of the minima, it was also the highest since the beginning of the observations.
Throughout said month, thermal anomalies close to 4 degrees were observed in the interior of Andalusia, eastern Extremadura and southwest Castilla-La Mancha, and even values close to 5 degrees in some points of these regions.
In the rest of the southern half of the peninsula, as well as in areas of the Andes Cantabrian, Ebro valley and southern Castilla y León, the anomalies were located around 3 degrees; in the rest of the peninsula, they were close to 2 degrees, except in areas of the Cantabrian eastern and coasts of Catalonia and of the Valencian Community, where they had values close to 1 degree.
In baleares the anomalies had values between 0-2 degrees, while in the Canary Islands They were between 1-3 degrees.
Among the main observatories, the 38.8 degrees of Córdoba/airport, the 37.4 degrees of Morón de la Fronteraand the 36.9 degrees of Granada/airport and Sevilla/airport, all of them measured on the 27th.
Regarding the minimums, the lowest values were observed in the first days of the month, highlighting the -8.1 degrees of Molina de Aragón registered on the 5th, the -6.9 degrees of Burgos/airport on the 5th, the -5.2 degrees from Valladolid/airport also on the 5th, and the -4.6 degrees from Puerto de Navacerrada registered on the 13th.
At the main station in Burgos/airport, the minimum on the 5th was the lowest in a month of April since the beginning of the series.
Rainfall: the driest in the historical series
Regarding rainfall, it has been extremely dry, with an average value on the peninsula of 14.2 liters per square meter22% of the normal value for the month (reference period: 1991-2020). It has been the driest April since 1961.
By areas, last month has been between extremely dry and very dry in almost the entire country, the island of Ibiza and the western Canary Islands; between dry and normal in Galicia, northern Catalonia, parts of Castilla y León, northern Navarra, northeastern Basque Country and coastal areas of Murcia and in the eastern Canary Islands it has been normal.
The highest daily rainfall recorded in main observatories corresponded to Santiago de Compostela/airport, with 57.8 liters on the 22nd; Hondarribia/Malkarroa with 35.2 liters on the 12th; Vigo/Aeropuerto with 31.8 liters and Pontevedra with 26.2 liters, on the 13th.
Regarding the total rainfall for the month, among the main stations, the 116.3 liters of Hondarribia/Malkarroa stand out; Santiago de Compostela/airport, with 103.4 liters and Vigo/airport with 101.6 liters.
