A 1962 Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO has sold for $51.7 million at Sotheby’s, making it the highest price ever paid for a car.
The example purchased by the unnamed collector – a Scaglietti-bodied Berlinetta – is the only GTO Tipo built in 1962 for the Scuderia Ferrari racing team. In the engine compartment, it had a 400 hp Superamerica 4.0-liter V12 Colombo engine in combination with a four-speed manual gearbox.
During one of the races, the engine was overheated, so already in 1963 it was exchanged for a standard 310 HP three-liter V12 combined with five-speed mechanics, but the car was sold to a private customer, bringing with it a certificate with the history of the car, specifications and the progress of the rebuild. The sports car changed several owners until it came to a collector in the USA in 1985, who kept it for 38 years.
Now the automotive rarity has been sold for 51 million 705 thousand dollars, surpassing the previous record of this model – 48 405 000 dollars.
