Tamara Sitole, 37, from South Africa, broke the world record of Halima Cisse of Mali, who gave birth to nine babies in Morocco last month. The South African gave birth to 10 twins in a hospital in Pretoria, with two more than the doctors had found during the medical consultation, her husband Teboho Tzotezi said.
Sitole already has other six-year-old twins and her pregnancy was natural, the newspaper writes, specifying that the woman has not been treated for infertility. “I’m happy. I’m excited. I can’t talk much,” said Father Teboho Tzotezi.
In an interview last month, Sitole admitted that she was both shocked and fascinated by her pregnancy.
When doctors told her earlier this year that she was pregnant with six signs, she didn’t believe it. Later examinations showed that there were actually eight babies. Sitole admits she was shocked by her pregnancy and found it very difficult at first. But now her only prayers are for her and the children to stay alive.
Prof. Dini Mavela, deputy head of the medical school at Sefaco McGatto University of Health Sciences, said Sitole’s case is rare and usually results from infertility treatment. The children will spend the next few months in an incubator, as it was a “high-risk” pregnancy, Mavella said.
“This is a unique situation. I don’t know how often it can happen. But it is an extremely risky pregnancy, an extremely complex and high-risk situation. The danger comes from the fact that there is no room in the womb for so many babies and some of them may be severely underdeveloped.
