Never before have so many people visited the Christmas market in the Valkenburg Municipal Cave as this year. In seven weeks, 200,000 people came to the market, the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul said. That number will probably increase slightly; Tomorrow the Christmas market will be open for the last time.
Councilor Kevin Rouwette is proud of the number of visitors. According to him, the Limburg city has put itself on the map as a Christmas city with the record. He emphasizes that despite the bad weather, the attractions and exhibitors above ground were also busy.
Last year, the Christmas market in the Municipal Cave also attracted a record number of visitors. Then 180,000 tickets were sold. That record has been easily broken this year.
The neighboring Velvet Cave also had its best season ever. According to newspaper The Limburger the market attracted around 150,000 visitors this year.
Safety
Security measures around the Christmas market were increased this month due to the increased threat level. Mayor Daan Prevoo called on people to avoid crowds and preferably come on a weekday.
“We are putting extra effort into vigilance, alertness and safety. We want to deploy more people at vulnerable points. We will also ask the police to deploy extra police volunteers to get more eyes on the street,” he said at the time. 1Limburg.
