Recognizing the Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes and Taking Action – Expert Advice from Thybo

If you’re unsure whether you have the disease, Thybo says you should be alert to three symptoms: fatigue, thirst and urge to urinate.

‘You may have been feeling unwell for some time and suffering from headaches. You also become more thirsty and therefore have to urinate more. These are the most common symptoms,” she says.

Other signs may be that you are more susceptible to skin infections and that wounds are more difficult to heal.

You may also suffer from unexplained weight loss and visual disturbances.

“You can also get itching around the genitals because you have more sugar in your urine and therefore more chance of yeast infections,” says Thybo.

And it is wise to take action if you suspect that you have the disease.

“The sooner you are treated, the faster you will feel better and the smaller the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and eye disease,” says Thybo.

In addition, type 2 diabetes is hereditary, the risk increases with age and the disease can be caused by obesity.

‘You cannot change heredity or age, but you can try to prevent type 2 diabetes by losing weight, eating healthy and exercising,’ says Thybo.

If you suspect that you have the disease, it is wise to go to the doctor. This can measure your HbA1c, which tells you what your blood sugar levels have been over the past three months, she explains.
