Recognizing the Symptoms of Diabetes Early: Acute and Chronic Signs to Look for

JawaPos.com– Internal medicine specialist Soebagijo Adi Soelistijo calls on everyone to recognize the symptoms of diabetes from an early age. This is considered important so there is no need to wait screening to find out if you have diabetes or not.

“We have to recognize diabetes early so that we know early, not wait screening. Must know the signs. “There are two, namely acute symptoms that occur suddenly and chronic symptoms,” said Soebagijo as quoted from Between on Monday (13/11).

There are three symptoms of acute diabetes. Namely eating a lot, drinking a lot, and peeing a lot. Those who experience the symptoms of eating a lot and then let it go, their appetite will decrease and their weight will also decrease.

“If you don’t get treatment, it could become serious,” said Soebagijo, who is also part of the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists.

Then there are also chronic symptoms of diabetes. These include tingling, burning sensation, cramps, fatigue, drowsiness, and blurred vision, resulting in frequently changing glasses because the size of the eye lens changes due to unstable sugar levels in the body.

“Other chronic symptoms include itching, loose teeth, decreased sexual ability, and pregnant women who often miscarry,” explained Soebagijo Adi Soelistijo.

“Pregnant women who frequently miscarry, apart from being a complication or chronic symptom, can also detect that the person is at risk for diabetes,” he added.

He explained that as a result of high sugar levels, as well as poor insulin action, it can cause changes in metabolism for both the baby and the mother. High sugar levels will change the blood vessels that are essential, so the baby will be prone to miscarriage.

The Ministry of Health guarantees financing screening free diabetes along with 13 other types of diseases. Namely hypertension, stroke, heart disease, cervical cancer, breast cancer, tuberculosis, anemia, lung cancer, colon cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), thalassemia, congenital hypothyroidism and hepatitis.

Meanwhile, for those who already have diabetes, it is recommended to recognize complications as quickly as possible. The most frequent acute complication of diabetes is hypoglycemia or a drop in blood sugar.

“Meanwhile, other chronic complications that we fear are blindness, stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, leg amputation,” explained Soebagijo.
