Doctor Siti Elkana Nauli Chair of the Heart Failure Working Group of the Indonesian Association of Cardiovascular Specialists (PERKI), reminds the public to be aware of differences gerd and heart failure. Because both have similar symptoms.
The cardiologist who is familiarly called dr. Nauli said, often patients who have symptoms such as shortness of breath, to the point that they are full quickly or feel full, are diagnosed gerd and was not given a referral to see a cardiologist.
“Most patients are diagnosed with stomach pain. But given gastric medicine did not heal. When we saw the X-rays, it turned out that his heart was enlarged, and he was given heart failure medication, it turned out to be better,” he said BetweenSunday (30/7/2023).
“All these complaints are not always synonymous with just one diagnosis,” added Dr. Nauli.
Generally patient differences gerd You will feel a burning sensation in your chest, but not tightness like symptoms of heart failure. But some suffer gerd what’s worse can also feel shortness of breath.
According to Dr. Nauli, self-examination for the early stages can also be done to find out these differences by pressing on the stomach in the stomach area, which is located slightly on the left side of the stomach.
“If gerd, when pressed it feels uncomfortable or painful, but if there is heart failure there are no complaints of any feeling. But we feel hard, it’s quite hard but the patient doesn’t complain of pain or soreness,” he explained.
Even though they are considered similar, he said that the difference in the symptoms of the two diseases was very clear. Symptoms of heart failure generally occur at night before morning, while the symptoms gerd can occur at an indefinite time.
“Gerd usually triggered by certain things, for example increased stress, or an unstable stomach condition, or an unstable eating condition. So there are indeed specific triggers related to the condition one usually eats or one’s level of anxiety, “added dr. Nauli.
Previously, dr. Nauli said people with symptoms of heart failure would tire easily, faint, have chest palpitations, and experience swelling of the stomach and legs, even the face area. These symptoms arise due to swelling of the heart which has accumulated fluid.
Furthermore, dr. Nauli said, heart disease is often ignored and taken for granted as we get older. In fact, the life span for patients who have been diagnosed with heart failure is even shorter than cancer patients.
For this reason, he emphasized the importance of heart failure awareness and treatment as early as possible.
“Patients with heart failure in general, within five years the chance that he will live is only 50 percent. Meanwhile, cancer patients can live up to 10 years. But if a heart failure patient survives more than five years, it’s rare,” he said.
As the name implies, heart failure is a spectrum of diseases caused by the heart failing to function, namely to pump blood throughout the body. Heart failure causes the needs of cells and other organs of the body to be unable to be met, which leads to death. (ant/dvn/saf/ham)
