In many cases, stroke patients receive medical treatment late because the initial symptoms that appear are not detected. If this happens, the risks that may lurk include nothing more than permanent disability or even death. So actually, what are the symptoms of stroke that need to be recognized?
It is often believed that one of the most common symptoms experienced by stroke patients is headache. This was confirmed by the neurosurgeon specialist Dr. Nur Setiawan Suroto, MD., Ph.D IFAANS. So, what exactly are the headaches that occur due to stroke? How do you differentiate them from ‘ordinary’ headaches that often appear every day?
“Indeed, one of the symptoms of a stroke is a headache. A severe headache that occurs suddenly and has never been felt before. In one type of stroke, called a hemorrhagic stroke, the symptom is a severe headache, sometimes accompanied by vomiting,” explained Dr. Iwan to detikcomFriday (2/2/2024).
Dr. Iwan explained, if headache symptoms occur, immediately go to the hospital so that the patient can receive medical treatment. Because the sooner medical treatment is given, the greater the patient’s risk of surviving the risk of permanent disability or death.
“If that happens (an unusual headache accompanied by symptoms of vomiting), then you must immediately go to the hospital for a scan. Then we will see how far the bleeding has occurred. If it is small bleeding, then with medicine it can be cured. But if the bleeding is extensive “There is a possibility that the patient will have to undergo surgery,” said Dr. Iwan.
“If there is a sudden headache, it could be suspected to be a symptom of a stroke. The shape of the headache is different from everyday headaches? Everyday headaches are migraines. But if the headache is due to a stroke, it is often a severe headache, even accompanied by vomiting. There is stiffness in the back of the neck,” he concluded.
