REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Recognize early warning signs dementia becomes very important because it can pave the way for patient care. Although there is no cure for dementia, early medical intervention will be very helpful.

Dementia symptoms can vary from one patient to another. Memory loss and confusion are the two most common signs. Other symptoms are slower speed of thinking, reduced mental sharpness and speed, mood swings, and difficulty in daily activities. Apart from that, there are other early signs of dementia that a person can notice when they are bathing.

Quoted from the page Mirror, Monday (25/12/2023), a study conducted by a team from the University of Chicago in the United States explored this symptom. The symptom in question is a significant decrease in the function of the sense of smell.

That’s because memory plays an important role in recognizing scents. In the study, researchers analyzed the sense of smell of 515 middle-aged people. The smell test developed is similar to similar vision and hearing tests.

The research team thinks the test could be useful in encouraging the public to be aware of potential warning signs of dementia. The way to do this is to pay attention to whether there is a decrease in the ability to smell shampoo and body soap when bathing.

The study’s senior author, Jayant M Pinto, said the research provides new clues about a drastic decline in the sense of smell as an indicator of dementia. Pinto is a professor of surgery at the University of Chicago who studies olfactory and sinus diseases. He and his team discovered structural changes in certain regions of the participants’ brains.

“We were able to show that the volume and shape of gray matter in the olfactory and memory-related areas of the brain in people with decreased sense of smell which is drastically smaller compared to people whose decline in the function of their sense of smell is not too severe,” said Pinto.
