Garlic is low in calories and rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese. It also contains small amounts of other nutrients. Here are the health benefits of garlic reported by the Health Line. (Also read: Why You Should Eat More Green Fruits and Vegetables? )
1. Reducing the severity of common illnesses
Garlic supplements are known to improve immune system function. One large 12-week study found that daily garlic supplements reduced the number of colds by 63% compared to a placebo.
Another study found that high doses of aged garlic extract (2.56 grams per day) reduced the number of cold or flu sick days by 61%. Despite the lack of solid evidence, adding garlic to your diet is worth a try if you catch colds frequently.
2. Lowering high blood pressure
Human studies have found garlic supplements to have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
In one study, 600-1,500 mg of aged garlic extract was as effective as the drug Atenolol in lowering blood pressure over a 24 week period. The supplement dosage must be high enough to get the desired effect. The amount needed is equivalent to about four cloves of garlic per day.
3. Lowers cholesterol levels
Garlic supplements seem to lower total and LDL cholesterol, especially in those with high cholesterol. HDL cholesterol and triglycerides do not appear to be affected.
4. Prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
Garlic contains antioxidants that support the body’s protective mechanisms against oxidative damage. High-dose garlic supplements have been shown to increase antioxidant enzymes in humans, as well as to significantly reduce oxidative stress in those with high blood pressure.
The combined effect on lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as antioxidant properties, may reduce the risk of common brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. (Also read: Becoming a suspect in a porn video case, Gisel’s career is predicted not to fall )
5. Helps live longer
The potential effects of garlic on longevity are basically impossible to prove in humans. But given the beneficial effects on important risk factors like blood pressure, it makes sense that garlic could help live longer.
The fact that garlic fights infectious diseases is also an important factor, as it is a common cause of death, especially in the elderly or people with a malfunctioning immune system.
