Stroke can cause a person to experience partial or even complete disability. Quick and early action must be taken to prevent disability from occurring, one of which is the FAST (Face, Arm, Speech, Time) method.
The President Director of the National Brain Center Hospital (PON) dr. Mursyid Bustami, Sp. S(K) said the stroke happened suddenly, so there was no slow stroke.
“So people who are doing activities also suddenly have one hand weak, suddenly they say it’s not true, how come their face goes down like that,” he said at the Gedbyar Edukasi press conference in the context of Virtual National Health Day, Thursday (9/9) in Jakarta.
Immediate action must be taken by bringing the patient to the hospital. To recognize early symptoms, people can use the FAST (Face, Arm, Speech, Time) method.
dr. Mursyid explained, Face is a symptom seen from a person’s face that looks abnormal, such as going down one side and not symmetrical.
Arm is a symptom of stroke that is seen from the patient’s arm becoming weak. If the arm is raised then the height is not the same as the other arm.
Speech, stroke symptoms are seen from the patient’s speech which becomes difficult, unclear, or even unable to speak.
Time, the last method after the previous three methods were indicated for the patient, then it was time to take the patient to the hospital.
dr. Mursyid said if he had been exposed to these symptoms, it can be ascertained that the person had had a stroke and had to be taken to the hospital immediately.
“By recognizing these symptoms, stroke patients have helped a lot,” he said.
Not only FAST, there are also other stroke symptoms that can occur in sufferers, including suddenly feeling dizzy, or suddenly unable to see and a very severe headache.
The most appropriate treatment for someone who has a sudden stroke is to take him to the hospital immediately.
“If someone has stroke symptoms, whoever and whenever comes to the hospital. No matter how light a stroke is, don’t say it’s light or it will heal on its own, it’s not like that,” said dr. Murshid.
Some people understand that stroke can be cured by massage, bleeding from the ear, and sticking a needle into the body part that has had a stroke. dr. Mursyid emphasized that this understanding was wrong and that the most appropriate treatment was to take the patient to the hospital.
“That is an incorrect assumption, which is wrong, yes, there is no benefit at all against stroke. So if there is a stroke, go to the hospital at any time, so don’t wait for tomorrow, don’t wait for anyone, “said dr. Murshid.
