Cramping in the thighs, calves and hips is a symptom of peripheral vascular disease, which is a complication of high cholesterol. In peripheral vascular disease (PVD), the blood vessels become narrow, hardened or blocked thereby restricting blood flow to the limbs, most often in the legs.

PVD can cause reduced hair growth on the legs, reddish blue or pale skin, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, and numb feet.

Severe blockage of blood to the lower limbs can cause severe pain in the feet and toes, even when sitting down doing nothing.
