Recognize the Signs of Covid-19 Attacking the Heart

Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – Covid-19 is not only a disease that attacks the respiratory tract. Corona virus can also attack other organs, including the heart.

According to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), nearly 78% of young patients who managed to recover from Covid-19 showed signs of complications and heart damage.

Worse, Covid-19 patients who have a history of heart problems can cause death. A study conducted by China CDC Weekly, found 22% of Covid-19 patients who died because of heart problems.

Reporting from the Times of India, Tuesday (19/1/2021), here are five signs of Covid-19 attacking the heart.

1. Extreme Fatigue
Extreme fatigue has often been reported as a symptom of people diagnosed with heart damage after Covid-19. When your heart works harder to get blood around your body, it can make you feel tired. This is one of the earliest warning signs of heart problems.

2. Inflammation of the heart
Myocarditis or inflammation of the heart muscle is a dreaded complication of the heart. Myocarditis can occur due to a direct attack of the Covid-19 virus in the heart, or it could be due to a cytokine storm that causes the body to mistakenly attack healthy cells.

It makes the heart muscle weaker, causes organs to enlarge, and interferes with blood flow. Then it can cause your blood pressure level to drop unexpectedly and cause fluid buildup. In addition, excessive pressure on the lungs or heart can also cause heart failure.

3. Low Oxygen Saturation
Low oxygen saturation is also a sign that Covid-19 is attacking the heart. Conditions such as hypoxia, disorientation, confusion, bluish lips or face can also signal heart problems. Any disruption to blood flow can cause it to clot, increase inflammation, and make it harder for the heart to do its job.

4. Chest Pain
Chest pain is associated with decreased lung function, shortness of breath, and heart damage. In the case of Covid-19, the multiplication and spread of the virus can remove vital organs, such as the heart, from healthy oxygenated blood, which can damage the heart muscle and result in chest pain, or angina.

Chest pain is also considered to be one of the first signs of a heart attack. In some cases, extreme chest pain and heart rate can also cause fainting.

5. Suffering from POTS
Some researchers believe that patients infected with Covid-19, especially those who travel long distances, can develop postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This condition can damage the nervous system, causing an imbalance in heart rate, and unusual blood pressure levels.

POTS can also have symptoms such as dizziness, low blood circulation, causing heart palpitations, dizziness, and compromised immunity, all of which are considered early signs of heart problems.
