JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – Diabetes and its complications are serious health problems that need to be watched out for.

In addition to heart attacks, strokes, and foot infections, diabetes can also attack the eyes so that in the long term it can cause blindness.

Launch Kompas.com, Wednesday (11/17/2021), ophthalmologist Referano Agustiawan explained that diabetes usually attacks the sufferer’s sense of sight through blood vessels in the retina.

“Some eye diseases that often appear in diabetics include glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy,” said the doctor who is familiarly called Rano.

“However, the most severe and can cause damage to the retina or blindness are cataracts and diabetic retinopathy,” he continued.

According to Rano, the risk of diabetics experiencing blindness is 25 times higher than the average person.

However, it should be noted, cataracts can still be cured through surgery within 15-20 minutes with very small wounds without requiring treatment.

Unlike the case with diabetic retinopathy which can only be corrected with proper blood sugar control so that it does not end up causing blindness.
