Recognize risk factors and signs of ovarian cancer kanker

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Chairman of the Indonesian Oncology and Gynecology Association (HOGI) Prof. DR. dr. Andrijono, Sp.OG(K) said that usually early stage ovarian cancer is found by chance.

Therefore, he invites every woman to be aware of the threat of ovarian cancer by recognizing risk factors and early detection of ovarian cancer.

“Symptoms of ovarian cancer are often misinterpreted with symptoms of other diseases, so they often go unnoticed and are only discovered when they have reached an advanced stage. Whereas if detected early, ovarian cancer can be treated,” said Andrijono in a health webinar, Saturday.

In fact, 20 percent of ovarian cancers are detected at an early stage, and 94 percent of early-stage patients live more than five years after being diagnosed, he continued.

Given that there are no specific symptoms as an early marker, he invites women to be more aware of ovarian cancer. To spread awareness about ovarian cancer, the Indonesian Oncology and Gynecology Association (HOGI), Indonesian Cancer Information & Support System (CISC) together with AstraZeneca launched the 10 Finger Campaign.

This campaign was created to identify six risk factors and four signs of ovarian cancer. Six risks of ovarian cancer, namely a history of endometrial cysts, having a family history of ovarian cancer and breast cancer, experiencing genetic mutations (eg BRCA), low parity rates, poor lifestyle and increasing age. While the four signs of ovarian cancer are bloating, decreased appetite, frequent urination and pelvic or abdominal pain.

Andrijono emphasized that health problems if detected as early as possible would be easier to treat. So, avoid fear or hesitation to check yourself if there are complaints that are felt. If you experience certain complaints, try to observe first for one to two weeks. If the complaint is still felt, immediately get checked.

“If the complaint disappears, the examination may be postponed, but if it continues to repeat, check immediately. Any complaints, cough, runny nose, diarrhea, all of them are complaints. Cough and cold can be (symptom) throat cancer, mouth cancer, diarrhea can be (symptom) cancer intestines. If there’s any persistent disease, don’t hesitate to get checked out.”

Ovarian cancer is the 8th leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. In Indonesia, ovarian cancer is ranked 3rd in terms of incidence and mortality rates for cancer in women.
