In New York, pedestrians no longer have to obey traffic lights and crosswalks. The residents of the town almost did anyway, so the town council has now decided to formally delete the rule.
The underlying reason for the city council’s surprising step is more serious: because complete disregard for basic traffic rules is largely a tradition in New York, the police rarely issue fines for it. Unless the pedestrian is dark skinned or Latino.

More than 90 percent of the dangerous crossing tickets were given to New Yorkers of color.

The traffic lights and crosswalks are certainly not completely useless because of the new rule. The police may no longer fine those who cross the wrong way, but insurers will still look into it and so will the civil court. Anyone who causes an accident by crossing the road recklessly remains liable for the misery he or she causes.
