Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the general election (election) Turki the second round which was held on Sunday (28/5).
The voting results showed that the incumbent succeeded in gaining 52.14 percent of the vote.
This victory marks the resumption of Erdogan’s reign until 2028. The 2023 election itself is the third time Erdogan has won in 20 years of ruling Turkey.
He was first elected president in 2014, having served as Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014.
His party, the AKP, has been Turkey’s ruling party since 2002.
Meanwhile, in this election, Erdogan’s arch-rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, pocketed 47.86 percent of the vote.
Kilicdaroglu is Erdogan’s strongest challenger, who narrowly lost to Erdogan in the first round by four points.
At that time, Erdogan won 49.51 percent of the vote, while Kilicdaroglu pocketed 44.88 percent of the vote.
Since the beginning, observers have predicted that Erdogan will win again in this election. One of the reasons is because his party, the AKP, won in 10 of the 11 provinces affected by Turkey’s devastating earthquake in early February.
Not only that, the losing presidential candidate, Sinan Ogan, earlier this week also gave his support to Erdogan. He asked his supporters to vote for the incumbent in the second round. In the first round, Ogan won 5.17 percent of the vote.
