RECENZIJA: Red Hot Chili Peppers “The return of the canteen of dreams”

When I saw the news of the new “Red Hot Chili Peppers” studio record in Western music releases, which was even billed as “the most anticipated rock album of the year”, at first I thought: oh , yes, finally, finally “RHCP” is a new masterpiece! But just at the next moment, a realization came: by the way, in April of this year, “pepperi” has already released a new studio album “Unlimited Love”, which broke the silence of six years, what is it this?!

No mistake, “RHCP” have really released their 13th studio album with 17 (!) New tracks in total 1 hour and 15 minutes. The band’s longtime friend Rick Rubin (Rick Rubin), with whom the previous creative collaboration produced albums such as “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” (1991), “Californication” (1999), “By The Way” is from new (or still) at the producer’s desk (2002), “Stadium Arcadium” (2006) and also in the aforementioned “Unlimited Love”, which, apparently, was not even in second place in any of the main national charts – building n. 1 everywhere.

The album was written in the same studio sessions when “Unlimited Love” (presumably 50 songs were recorded at that time), and probably only God (and Rick Rubin) knows how it was decided which song to put on which album.

“We just recorded some music, we just wrote and wrote, there was no time limit, until we ended up recording them all,” says drummer Chad Smith. “We’ve also written more material in the past than what’s put on the albums, but usually those songs are archived somewhere or unfinished, but this time we’re all done. We felt we had too many good songs not to release them on another record. This isn’t a so-called b-side selection or anything like that, it’s all very nice and correct. “

PAR. “RHCP” have not lost their signature – they already say this with the opening song of the album, the “fancrotica” “Tippa My Tongue”. Recommended tracks – “Eddie” (genius John Frusciante!) And “The Drummer”, also “Roulette” and “Reach Out”. But the greatest pleasure in all of this work is provided by Frusciante’s brilliant guitar playing and Flee’s masterful bass.

VERSUS. After listening to the new “RHCP” work a couple of times, the hand has already rushed to slam something on the computer keyboard about “the biggest disappointment of the year” or “the worst rock album of the year”, but when you dig deeper into the “Return Of …” material, you also find positive moments there. But! Not so much that you don’t want to burn this album to the ground. Even Western music critics, although “generally in favor” (this is exactly the term “metacritical”) have awarded him a total of 69 points out of 100 in the aforementioned “Metacritica” ranking, but this is a failure for a supergroup like ” RHCP “.

It’s unclear if “RHCP” really lacked brave, good consultants who could tell Anthony Kied & Co. that – boy, the half-hundred-song material you wrote isn’t very successful, maybe we should stick to one record, huh ? 17 songs on one album, 17 songs on the second album, but together it creates a scene where there is a whole pile of songs, of which only a tenth could be called a real hit.
