The mother found the minor hanged in the hallway at the entrance of the building.
The incident occurred this Tuesday.
Although authorities have not confirmed whether he attempted to take his own life, Mayor Eric Adams said the boy had shoelaces around his throat.
Residents of the shelter, which houses families with children, are dismayed after the dramatic scene. “I don’t know what happened to him, I saw that he was extremely sick, drool coming out of his mouth. I was scared,” Alejandro Sánchez, one of the witnesses, told Univision 41.
“The lady had untied him (the cord) and immediately went to call the guard, they helped her, but the child was already unconscious,” said Luis Sigcha, who also lives in the shelter.
Two immigrants have taken their lives in New York since spring 2022
If it is confirmed that the boy made an attempt on his own life, it would be the third case since the spring of 2022, when the wave of asylum seekers began in New York City.
Psychologist Juan Carlos Dumas spoke with Univision 41 regarding this type of incidents, and highlighted the importance of giving “priority” to children and young people. “That psychic apparatus is not yet formed and does not have the survival and resilience resources of an adult.”
