Recent Spree of Random Attacks in Manhattan Triggers Concerns and Prompts Police Search

NEW YORK — Authorities are searching for a man who allegedly randomly punched a woman in the face in Manhattan’s Chelsea, the latest in a series of unprovoked attacks.

This incident, which was reported by police on Tuesday, occurred on March 20, and marks at least the fifth attack of this type in recent weeks. The military does not consider it a trend and has not said whether the March 20 attack is related to the other incidents.

Our sister network NBC 4 has tracked at least five attacks since March 20, including the one just reported. In that case, a 23-year-old woman was walking along the Avenue of the Americas around 10 in the morning when a stranger hit her in the face with a closed fist. She was taken to a hospital for treatment for a nose injury, while her attacker fled from her.

The other stories have been similar: all women, mostly in their 20s, were attacked in broad daylight by a man who punched them in the face. The New York Police said they have so far arrested three people in various cases.

The violence is part of a 10% increase in misdemeanor assaults in the city year over year, according to NYPD statistics.

Anyone with information can confidentially call authorities at 1-888-57-PISTA.
