A recent scientific discovery has revealed the truth about a part of a wall in ancient Jerusalem, overturning the opinion of experts and confirming an account found in the Bible.
Until now, experts believed that this section of the wall in the original heart of the city was built by Hezekiah, King of Judah, whose reign spanned the 7th and 8th centuries BC
The monarch had seen his neighbors to the north, in the Kingdom of Israel, destroyed by the Assyrian Empire, and it was believed that he built the wall to protect himself from the invaders.
But now, a nearly ten-year study has revealed that the wall was built after all by Hezekiah’s great-grandfather, Uzziah, after a great earthquake, according to the biblical account.
The wall is in the City of David – the historical archaeological site that created the capital city of Jerusalem, according to the Bible.
Joe Uziel of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) explains to the Daily Mail that “for decades it was assumed that this wall was built by Hezekiah, King of Judah, but it is now becoming clear that he ‘ going back to the days of King Uzziah. , as recommended in the Bible.”
The study, a joint project between the IAA, Tel Aviv University and the Weizmann Institute of Science, revealed the origin of the ancient wall through carbon-14 dating.
Called radiocarbon dating, this method uses the rate of decay of a radioactive isotope of carbon (14C) to estimate the time and date of objects containing carbonaceous matter.
Scientists collected samples of organic materials found at four different excavation sites in the old heart of Jerusalem, such as grape seeds, date pits and even bat skeletons.
They were all cleaned, turned into graphite and then put in a particle accelerator at speeds of 3,000 km per second to separate the carbon-14 from other organic materials.
The new discoveries strengthen the idea that Jerusalem grew in size and gained size towards Mount Zion as early as the 9th century BC This was during the reign of King Jehoshua – a hundred years before the exile Assyrian. Furthermore, it shows that the city was larger than previously thought during the reign of David and Solomon.
