House explosion what happened in Plum, a suburb of Pittsburgh in the United States, killed 5 people, including his father and son. Three people were also injured in the incident whose cause is still mysterious, whether natural or other factors.
In the last 15 years, there have been at least three such explosions in the area. In the latest incident, three houses were destroyed and at least a dozen others suffered damage.
As quoted detikINET from CNN, this incident originally started with the explosion of one house and the fire also engulfed two neighboring houses. The wind factor caused other houses to fall victim.
The fire department immediately went to the scene. “I heard a boom that was so loud it woke me up. I thought it was thunder from a thunderstorm last night. Very scary,” said one of the residents, Alexis Typanski.
The gas network has been shut down and the area is still considered dangerous. The two victims who died were identified as Casey Clontz and their 12-year-old son, Keegan. “Keegan and Casey were happiest when they were together,” their family said in a statement.
Investigations are still being carried out, including the cause of similar explosions that have previously occurred in the area. In March 2008, a man was killed and a 4-year-old girl was injured when a house exploded there.
Several theories have been put forward, including that a natural gas pipe was damaged during excavations in 2003. “This activity damaged the protective coating of the pipe and made it susceptible to corrosion,” authorities said.
Michael Huwar, president of the company People Natural Gas, claimed the gas system was operating normally when the incident occurred. Currently, that system is shut down as a security measure.
The impact of the explosion and blaze can be seen in aerial footage of the neighborhood, which shows three buildings completely burned to the ground, surrounded by heavy debris that engulfed nearby lawns and homes. Several cars near the area were also seen charred and smoking.
