Rioting broke out in central Dublin on Thursday evening. According to Irish media, a group has turned against the police. Police are investigating a stabbing incident earlier today. Five people were injured, including three young children.

Around 1:30 PM (local time), a man attacked a group of young people at a school. Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets after rumors circulated about the nationality of the stabbing suspect. The man is said to be from abroad. The police have not confirmed this.

A number of demonstrators wore, according to a journalist from the news agency AFP signs reading “Irish Lives Matter” and Irish flags. The Irish Times reports that a group of protesters chanted anti-immigration slogans.

Fireworks were thrown and a fire was set. A passenger car and a city bus, among others, went up in flames. At least one police officer is also said to have suffered injuries. In addition, shops were allegedly looted.

Police chief holds ‘completely insane group of hooligans’ responsible

Police Chief Drew Harris holds a “completely insane group of hooligans driven by far-right ideology” responsible for the unrest. He warns against the spread of misinformation.

Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee has called for calm “so the police can do their job”. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has expressed his disgust at the disturbances.

“We will not allow a small group to use this terrible incident to sow division,” McEntee continued.
