The Taitung County Fire Department received a report at around 11:00 a.m. that someone had drowned in Sangshu Creek in the mountainous area of Dongxing New Village (Dalumak) in Beinan Township for about 6 minutes. The Fire Department mobilized special search personnel to rescue, and sent an ambulance from the High Rescue Team to take him to Mackay Hospital in Taitung for emergency treatment. After rescue, he was pronounced dead. The ambulance personnel said that when they arrived at the scene and pulled the drowning man to the surface, the man had already shown OHCA (cardiopulmonary function arrest, no signs of life), and the depth of the incident was deeper than that of an adult.
According to eyewitnesses, the drowning man had no equipment on his body and suddenly choked on water while floating on his back and sank into the water. At first, everyone thought the man was holding his breath for diving, but he didn’t surface for about 6 minutes before he realized he was drowning. Because everyone didn’t know how deep the water was, they didn’t dare to get close to pull people. It took about 20 minutes from drowning to being rescued.
According to the preliminary investigation by the police, the drowning person was surnamed Chen, 35 years old, a native of Taitung, and his family members have been contacted.
