Recent Attacks in Yobe State, Nigeria by Boko Haram: 40 Killed, Largest in the Past Year and a Half

At least 40 people have been killed in attacks in the Nigerian state of Yobe this week, according to police. The actions were probably the work of the jihadist terrorist organization Boko Haram.

According to the police, these are the largest attacks in the state in the past year and a half. Boko Haram has not claimed the attacks.

Attackers opened fire on villagers in Gurokayeya on Monday. At least seventeen people were killed. A day later, a landmine exploded, killing another 20 villagers returning from Monday’s funeral for the victims.

Until this week it was relatively quiet in Yobe. The last attack was in April last year, when a bomb exploded. In the 2010s, attacks occurred more often in Yobe, regularly resulting in dozens of deaths.

Boko Haram is more active in neighboring Borno state. In terms of population, it is approximately one and a half times as large as Yobe with six million people.
