Recap of the Exciting Third Saturday Conference of the New Bundesliga Season: Highlights and Results

The third Saturday conference of the new Bundesliga season! Read all about the five games here.

Bremen – Mainz 4:0

Ironically, in the first game without Niclas Füllkrug (30/for 14 million euros plus bonuses to Dortmund) Werder got their first win of the season. After two bankruptcies at the start, the Bremen team got rid of their frustration – 4-0 against Mainz!

There’s a penalty for the first Werder attack. Hanche-Olsen hits Ducksch on the heel, the striker coolly converts the bottom right (2nd). For Werder it was the earliest penalty goal in ten years (in May 2013 by Aaron Hunt after two minutes). Mainz have never conceded such an early penalty goal in their entire Bundesliga history!

After a cross from Weiser, Stage heads the 2-0 (53rd minute). Then Mainz breaks apart. Bittencourt (82nd) and Njinmah (84th) make everything clear with a double strike.

Without a filling jug, Werder gets the first three against Mainz, who are still without a win – and ends a horror series. Mainz had won the last three duels in Bremen (8:0 goals).

Stuttgart – Freiburg 5:0

Next Stuttgart home game, next party!

After beating Bochum 5-0 on matchday one, VfB also beat Freiburg 5-0. For the first time since March 2008 (6:3 against Bremen, 4:1 against Rostock) Stuttgart has scored ten goals in two consecutive home games.

First Führich completes a fine solo (8th) down the left flank, then there’s the Guirassy double pack! The striker initially hits low from 16 meters (17′), just two minutes later he pushes a perfect cross from Ito over the line (19′).

Strong: Stuttgart hit the bull’s eye with their first three shots on goal – it’s the earliest 3-0 lead in 15 years (before in May 2008 against Frankfurt)! For Guirassy it’s goals four and five of the season – the last time the legend Karl Allgöwer managed that at VfB was in the 1984/85 season.

After that, the otherwise stable Freiburgers disintegrate into their individual parts. Führich goes 4-0 up (62nd/first Bundesliga brace), Millot even 5-0 (75th). For the first time in the pairing, a team scores five goals.

Augsburg – Bochum 2:2

Waiting for the first victory!

Augsburg and Bochum are still without a three after the 2-2 draw – because both make too many mistakes on the defensive.

A simple one-two levers out the Bochum defense. Beljo plays out left to Demirovic, who returns to the center on Beljo. In the middle – 1: 0 Augsburg (36th). The second goal of the season for the three-million purchase from Osijek (after a loan last year).

But Augsburg’s defense also fails! After Wittek hit the post, Pedersen’s liberation failed completely, landing over Hofmann in front of Asano’s feet. He nails the ball under the bar from a short distance. Compensation (45 + 3)!

In the second half, Demirovic scored the second Augsburg lead (62′), but this time it only lasted two minutes! Asano pushes a wonderful chip pass from Stöger fantastically with his outside instep. 2:2, double pack!

Hoffenheim – Wolfsburg 3:1

Wolfsburg loses the clean record!

At 1: 3 in Hoffenheim, VfL conceded the first bankruptcy after two wins at the start (2: 0 against Heidenheim, 2: 1 in Cologne). At first it looked like the third success!

Wind (already four goals this season) shines as a preparer this time. The Dane plucks a tee shot from Casteels perfectly, directs it in one movement with the outside of his foot into Tomas’ run. The new signing from Stuttgart hits the short corner to make it 1-0 (36th).

But then Hoffenheim turns up the heat – and the game! Newcomer Brooks (in Wolfsburg from 2017 to 2022) uses a cross from Bülter (45+2), Beier from Skov (60). Then Joker hits Skov himself – inside the post and in (75′).
