Recap of Moscow Mayor’s Cup: Spartak Outplays CSKA, Dynamo Takes Third Place

In the final of the Moscow Mayor’s Cup, Spartak convincingly outplayed CSKA, Dynamo Moscow took third place; in the match for the fifth, Kunlun defeated Amur.

“Amur” and “Kunlun”, playing in the Moscow Mayor’s Cup as special guests, took the last places in their groups, losing once in regular time and in a series of shots – and met in the match for fifth place.
The opponents started without a buildup – even 30 seconds had not passed since the starting face-off, as Spencer Fu had already opened the scoring; and it took Alex Broadhurst less than two minutes to restore balance. The next burst of activity arose closer to the break, and it was even more rapid: Sergey Lapin and Broadhurst turned a draw into a double advantage for Amur in 37 seconds – with a fairly equal, double-edged fight on the whole.

In addition to the goals, there were enough deletions in the first period – five, including the mutual one between Alexander Shchemerov and Spencer Fu. In the second segment, only Nikita Parfenyuk retired, and the spectators did not see the abandoned pucks. Although the game has ceased to be equal: Khabarovsk took the initiative, throwing the Chinese twice (24-12, of which 14-6 on shots on target).

This advantage melted away like smoke due to two consecutive violations of Sergei Kolesnikov, who first went to the bench for a knee strike, and a shift after the “early release” – again, for the bandwagon. In the first case, the removal was implemented by Kyle Wood, in the second – by Lucas Lockhart.
At the last minute of regular time, indiscipline has summed up the already nominal guests. One by one, Colin Campbell and Devin Brosso retired, and therefore the end of the third period and almost half of the overtime went in a five-on-three arrangement. But neither this advantage, nor the subsequent five-minute (plus until the end of the match) penalty for stabbing Doyle Somerby was used by the Far East, and in a series of throws, the victory of Kunlun was brought by successful attempts by Brandon Yip and Lockhart.

In the last three game days of the pre-season, Nizhny Novgorod and Minsk have the biggest load: they will meet with Admiral on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, and on Sunday they played each other. At the same time, the Torpedo team refrained from test matches for a week, while the Dynamo team met with the same Admiral the day before – and confidently won 4:1. Therefore, the guests looked fresher as expected, and in the first period they had an advantage, albeit small, but still. It was displayed, however, only in one goal – it was scored by Yegor Letunov, who turned out to be the most agile in finishing off during the majority draw.

In the second segment, the territorial superiority of “Torpedo” increased significantly. Partly due to three removals (plus one intersecting, plus one more just before the break) of the hosts, but even in equal compositions, the Volgaites also lingered for a long time in a foreign zone. Nevertheless, the quality control of the puck rarely led to truly dangerous shots. And in cases where he still led, Dylan Ferguson and Yegor Velmakin, who replaced him in the middle of the match, performed flawlessly.

Dynamo in the third period began to play much more actively and seized the initiative. A minute and a half before the end of regular time, Nizhny Novgorod remained in the minority, Dmitry Kvartalnov replaced Velmakin with the sixth field player, and 20 seconds before the siren, Jemel Smith equalized the score. On an emotional upsurge, the hosts went to score in overtime, Ivan Kulbakov helped out several times, and then Aleksey Kruchinin ran one on one and scored the winning goal.

Dynamo Moscow and Vityaz met in the match for third place at the Moscow Mayor’s Cup. Already in the second minute, Cedric Paquette broke the rules, and the blue and white almost survived. Just a second before the release of the fined on the ice, Vladislav Kara completed a beautiful combination with an accurate throw into an empty corner of the goal.

Puckett quickly corrected himself by equalizing the score – also in the majority. Most of the hosts were provided by Vladislav Valentsov, who later also rehabilitated with an assist to Stanislav Yarovoy; and in the interval between these two goals, Yegor Morozov scored.

Thus, by the middle of the second period, the opponents took the lead once and compared. And then the Muscovites rushed to the lead: Paquette again, followed by Andrei Mironov, set the score 4-2 by the second break, and Jordan Weale took part in three of the four goals as an assistant.

The Knights tried very hard to finish the preseason on a positive note, but Dynamo in the third period clearly held back their onslaught, and they themselves had the opportunity to increase the score. In the end, Mironov did it, sending the puck into the already empty net a minute and a half before the siren.

CSKA and Spartak fought not only for the Moscow Mayor’s Cup, but also to remain the only team that did not lose a single match in the preseason: no one except them went through August without at least one defeat. And the first period of this confrontation took place mostly in the zone of current champions. In 20 minutes, the Spartacists made 30 shots: seven of them were blocked by the army team, of the rest, more than half (14) hit the target. Whereas Patrick Ribar was disturbed only four times. It happened because of three removals from CSKA. The first and second red and blue survived, but in the third they still got a goal: Ivan Fedotov coped with both Dmitry Vishnevsky’s long-range shot and Matvey Zaseda’s finishing, and neither he nor the defenders saved Alexander Burmistrov from re-finishing.

Of course, this situation did not suit the army team, and after the break they made efforts to seize the initiative. The removal of Nikita Sokolov helped them in this, albeit an unrealized one. In equal numbers, they continued to attack, and in the end they were successful. Alexander Khokhlachev did the almost impossible, not allowing the puck to roll into the goal behind Ribar, but Vladislav Kamenev, who came to the rescue, nevertheless sent it to the target. At the end of the second period, Konstantin Okulov had an excellent opportunity to take CSKA forward, but Ribar did not allow him to.

In the third period, the playing advantage again passed to Spartak. After the mutual removal of Darren Dietz and Alexander Belyaev, the story of the first period was repeated with three removals from CSKA (two of which received the same Dietz). The implementation was repeated – on the third attempt, Khokhlachev brought Spartak forward. There were still four minutes left before the siren, but the army team did not have time to organize the final assault: Maxim Tsyplakov scored after Khokhlachev, after which the red-and-whites ran to score more on courage. Two minutes before the end of the match, Sergei Fedorov managed to catch a pause, replace Fedotov on the sixth field and transfer the game to a foreign zone, but nothing more.
